EFFECTIVE AUGUST 6, 2016

Summary of Service Changes

Please click on the route name/number for more details.

  • NEW Route 20 Woodcroft/South Square/Duke/VA Limited , en español– Route 20 serves the southern Durham/Woodcroft area to the Duke/VA medical area during peak hours.

  • Route 4 – To improve on time performance and reliability of connections at Durham Station, the inbound stop at Duke Regional Hospital was moved from the hospital grounds to Roxboro St.

  • Route 12 – **Proposal revised based on public feedback** To address increased travel times due to the Alston Avenue construction project, Route 12 now serves Riddle Rd and Cornwallis Rd in one direction each round trip, providing hourly service in each direction until 7:00 PM. This change is temporary – GoDurham plans to restore normal service levels to Riddle Rd and Cornwallis Rd after construction is complete.

  • Route 15 – To improve on-time performance, Route 15 no longer enters the Alexander Place Promenade shopping center. A new stop is on Brier Creek Pkwy at Skyland Ridge Pwky.

  • Routes 16A/16B/2A – Due to the East End Connector construction causing safety concerns for customers crossing US 70 on foot, as well as on-time performance issues for Route 2A, these required routing and naming changes.  Route 16 Sunday and Night Service is now Route 3L. Route 16A is Route 3B and has new routing. Route 16B is Route 3C and also has new routing. Night and Sunday service on Routes 2B and 16 will be combined into Route 23.

  • Extended Service Hours – GoDurham now operates until 9:00 PM on Sundays. The last trip departs Durham Station at 9:00 PM.

Route 4 Approved Service Change Details

  • In the inbound direction, Route 4 serves Duke Regional Hospital with a stop on Roxboro St instead of the current stop on the hospital grounds.  (A sidewalk path already exists connecting the current stop to the approved new stop, and the new stop has been prioritized for improvements including a shelter. The walking distance from the current stop to the approved stop is roughly 230 feet.)

  • No changes for outbound Route 4.

Reason for changes

  • Route 4 has been experiencing difficulty arriving at Durham Station on time during the afternoon peak. It arrives late to Durham Station 30% of the time, the worst trip being the 5:25PM trip, which arrives late 61% of the time.
  • Relocating the stop  allows Route 4 to remain on Roxboro St instead of turning right onto Crutchfield St, entering the hospital, and then turning right again onto Olympic Ave, saving a significant amount of time per inbound trip.

Route 12  Approved service changes

Route 12 only serves Riddle Rd and Cornwallis Rd in one direction each round trip. The direction not serving Riddle Rd and Cornwallis Rd would display “12B” on its headsign.

Monday – Saturday:

  • Buses departing Durham Station at :00 past the hour will serve Riddle Rd and Cornwallis Rd in the outbound direction only.
  • Buses departing Durham Station at :30 past the hour would serve Riddle Rd and Cornwallis Rd in the inbound direction only.
  • After 7:00 PM Riddle Rd and Cornwallis Rd will be served in the outbound direction only.

Sunday

  • Based on current ridership demands, buses will serve Riddle Rd and Cornwallis Rd inbound only before 12:00 PM and outbound only after 12:00 PM.

Reason for changes

  • Routing changes are necessary to mitigate the impact of increased travel times due to the Alston Ave Widening Project, scheduled to begin the summer of 2016. The project will close off Route 12’s access to the Durham Freeway on-ramp, requiring it to use a detour route into Durham Station. This detour will add time to the route. Route 12 is already using all of its scheduled time at many times of day, and detouring from Durham Freeway will require time the route does not have. The approved routing is expected to save five minutes per trip—enough time to use a detour route.

Route 15 Approved Service Changes

  • Route 15 would have a shortened turnaround at the Brier Creek Pkwy Walmart, no longer using the Alexander Place Promenade stops adjacent to Walmart and Kohl’s. Instead, the route would serve a new stop on Brier Creek Pkwy at Skyland Ridge Pkwy, roughly 840 feet from the main entrance of Walmart.

  • After serving the new stop, Route 15 would make a left turn onto ACC Blvd and then continue on its current routing.

  • The trip which currently departs Durham Station at 5:00PM and returns at 5:55PM would be adjusted to depart at 4:45PM, still returning at 5:55PM.

Reason for changes

  • Due to traffic congestion on NC 147, Route 15 frequently arrives late to Durham Station during afternoon peak hours. Shortening the turnaround is expected to allow most round trips to return to Durham Station within the scheduled 55 minutes.

  • However, traffic congestion on the 5:00PM round trip is so severe that even with the shortened turnaround, the bus would not be able to complete the round-trip in 55 minutes. Shifting the current 5:00PM trip to 4:45 PM would give 70 minutes for this round trip, allowing it to arrive to Durham Station on time most days (reducing the chance of passengers traveling from Brier Creek missing 6:00PM and 7:00PM transfers at Durham Station).

Routes 2A, 16B, and 16A Approved Service Changes

  • Route 2A—The bus would no longer serve Lynn Rd. Passengers who currently board at the US 70 at Lynn Rd stop could walk to a new stop on Pleasant Dr at Lynn Rd. Passengers coming from east of US 70 could use approved Route 16B service (which would not require crossing US 70).

  • Route 16B—The bus would be rerouted to serve Lynn Rd east of US 70 and would no longer serve Ross Rd or Junction Rd. Those roads would be served by Route 16A. Route 16B would turn around at the Springwood Park Apartments.

  • Route 16A—The bus would be rerouted to serve Ross Rd and would no longer serve stops on NC 98 east of Junction Rd. Those stops would be served by Route 16B.

Reason for Changes

  • East End Connector construction is causing heavy congestion and on time performance issues along US 70. Route 2A is late arriving to Durham Station 44% of the time during the afternoon peak hours, the worst trip being the 5:55PM arrival, which arrives late 77% of the time. Skipping Lynn Rd would save time and keep the bus farther away from construction.

  • Safety is also a concern, as crossing US 70 is dangerous for pedestrians (especially with ongoing construction). Adding service to Lynn Rd north and east of US 70 would keep pedestrians from having to cross the highway to access bus service.
