GoDurham will be offering Microtransit in the Fall of 2024!

GoDurham is excited to begin offering Microtransit in the Fall of 2024 as an addition to public transportation in our community.

What is Microtransit?

Microtransit is a developing transit program designed to fill the service gap between regular fixed-route bus services and e-hailing services like Lyft or Uber. Microtransit uses technology to offer rides when you need them within the identified Zones, often using smaller vehicles like vans or shuttle buses. The great thing about this program is that the routes and times are flexible and change based on what riders need to make travel easier and more convenient. Riders will be able to use a mobile app or website or call to request a ride and then meet the vehicle where requested.

Go Durham’s Microtransit Program

GoDurham's Microtransit program will solve significant challenges in public transportation. It solves the "first-and-last mile" issue, where it's tough to find high-frequency fixed route bus service near where most people live and work. Microtransit connects users to the public bus system, helping them reach their final destinations and cutting down on using single-occupancy cars. Plus, it's a game-changer for "transit deserts," places with low population density where it's hard to set up efficient bus or train routes. Microtransit offers a more convenient and accessible service for riders in these areas.

The Microtransit program will initially include service in two zones – one in East Durham and another in North Durham. The East Zone includes The Village bus stop, where a bus arrives or departs every 15 minutes on Routes 3, 3B, and 3C. The North Zone includes connections to the Route 4 and Route 9 buses and destinations north of Horton and Hebron roads. All Microtransit rides must end within the zone where the trip began; rides outside and between zones will not be available through the Microtransit program, as these transfers can easily be made using GoDurham’s bus service.

The new Microtransit program will make getting around a breeze, reduce traffic jams, and provide a more personalized travel experience, making it an amazing addition to the GoDurham public transit program.
