International Women's Month

GoDurham is proud to celebrate International Women's Month!

 

International Women’s Day is recognized annually on March 8th, a day to recognize the amazing contributions women continue to make worldwide each and every day.

Within Durham, North Carolina, and within the State of North Carolina as a whole, we are honored to recognize some amazing women who have served this state in some shape or form throughout their careers, or who have simply called the State of North Carolina home.

                                                                    Famous Trailblazing Women


Lillian Exum Clement (1894–1925): The first woman elected to the North Carolina General Assembly.

Julie White: As the Deputy Secretary for Multimodal Transportation at the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), she oversees state rail, aviation, ferry, and bicycle/pedestrian divisions.


Clarissa Rankin: Based in Gastonia, NC, she is widely recognized in the trucking industry as one of the most famous female truck drivers globally and owns a CDL training academy.


Maya Angelou (1928–2014): Author, poet, and civil rights leader, Angelou has made her impact in various ways. For over 30 years Angelou taught At Wake Forest University, located in Winston-Salem North Carolina.  mayaangelou.wfu.edu/story/

 

Loretta Lynch (1959–present): First Black female U.S. Attorney General.


Beverly Perdue (1947–present): First female Governor of North Carolina.

 

Dr. Annie Lowrie Alexander (1864-1929): First licensed female physician to practice in North Carolina. 


Dr. Susan Dimock (1847-1875): Dimock a North Carolina Native, was born in Washington North Carolina. Dimock was one of the first female doctors to practice in the US.
